Fluorescent and Halogen Lights

LED lights are generally considered better than halogen lights in the UK (and elsewhere) for several key reasons:
- Energy Efficiency
LEDs use up to 80-90% less electricity than halogen bulbs.
In the UK, where energy prices are relatively high, this translates to significant savings on energy bills.
Example: A 5W LED can provide the same brightness as a 35-50W halogen bulb.
- Longer Lifespan
LEDs can last 15,000–50,000 hours, compared to around 2,000 hours for halogens.
This means less frequent replacement, which is more cost-effective and convenient.
- Environmental Benefits
Using less energy reduces carbon emissions—a priority in the UK’s move toward net zero by 2050.
LEDs contain no harmful substances like mercury (which is found in some other light types).
Longer life = less waste in landfills.
- Cost Savings Over Time
While LEDs cost more upfront, they pay for themselves through lower energy use and fewer replacements.
The UK government and energy companies have promoted LED adoption through incentives and subsidies in the past.
- Less Heat Output
LEDs produce very little heat, while halogen bulbs get very hot (can cause burns or even fire risk in enclosed spaces).
Safer for homes, especially around children or flammable materials.
- Better for Regulations
The UK and EU have been phasing out halogen bulbs due to their inefficiency.
The sale of halogen lamps was banned in the UK from September 2021. Following this ban, the European Commission has introduced regulations under the RoHS Directive effectively banning fluorescent lighting for sale in the EU by 1st Sept 2023.

Halogen fittings can pose significant fire risks due to potential heat damage. When these fittings are improperly installed or used with bulbs that exceed their wattage rating, they can generate excessive heat. This heat may lead to damage to surrounding materials, such as insulation, timber, and plastic, increasing the likelihood of ignition. Additionally, inadequate ventilation around the fixtures can exacerbate these risks, as trapped heat can accumulate. Safety measures, such as using appropriately rated bulbs and ensuring proper installation, are essential to mitigate these dangers and prevent fire hazards associated with halogen lighting.
